A month earlier, a female cheetah, named Sasha, was found dead after suffering kidney problems.Įxperts have described the deaths as “unusual” and warned they may be the result of an unsuitable environment for the animals, negligence, or a lack of expertise among the park’s staff. In April, a six-year-old male, named Uday, died at the national park due to heart failure. Three unnamed cubs who were born to a Namibian cheetah in the Kuno National Park also died in May after being found to be weak, underweight and severely dehydrated. In May, India’s Supreme Court expressed concerns over the deaths and asked Mr Modi’s government to consider shifting the cats to an alternate location.Įarlier the same month, a female cheetah named Daksha died during a fight that broke out with a male cheetah during mating. The reintroduction of the species was greeted by much fanfare, with many welcoming the move to bring them back after they were officially declared extinct in 1952.īut the Kuno National Park, which was judged to be a “suitable habitat” for the animals by officials, has come under growing scrutiny after the spate of recent fatalities among the animals.
